Where are you moving?

As of January 14, 2010, I will be a resident of Launceston Tasmania, in Australia. If you've read my previous post you know why I am moving. Here is a little bit more about where I am going.

Launceston is a town of 80,000 people located at the head of the Tamar river in northern Tasmania. The second largest city in Tasmania boasts a large amount of vineyards, a brewery, some of the cleanest air in the world, and is surrounded by beautiful geographical features.

Lucy and I will be moving into her childhood home, with her parents in a nice little suburb 10 minutes outside of town. You couldn't ask for a more convenient temporary living situation. Kaye and Russell are great in-laws, and the negative connotations associated with the term "in-laws" really don't apply here. We'll have our own room, our own bathroom, and will even have a car to use when we arrive. As I mentioned, it doesn't much any easier for transition of such distance.

Tasmania itself is extremely diverse geographically, with rainforests, waterfalls, beaches, caves, and large areas of untouched forests.

The land is wild, but I won't be moving to the middle of the woods. Since my career is multimedia, which requires electricity, thankfully Launceston is a relatively bustling suburb. It is similiar in size to Portland, Maine. There should be enough business for both Lucy and I to settle in to decent jobs. Many advertising agencies, shops, businesses, and even a large University.

Launceston is very far away from Maine, where I grew up, and rest assured I will be one of, if not the only American expat living in the town.  People will make fun of my accent (when clearly THEY talk funny), and will make jokes at my expense. I expect to grin and bear it, and then when necessary I will give some back. I'm happy to finally be settling down in a place full of natural beauty.  What will I do there? The answer to this question will be the focus of my next post.
